The Micro+ Smokerlyzer™
Despite the dangers of smoking during pregnancy being well documented, many women need the support and advice of a health professional in order to give up. A percentage of oxygen carried by a smoker’s blood will be replaced by CO (COHb), causing breathlessness and strain on the heart. Less oxygen than normal will be supplied to the unborn child of a pregnant smoker, leading to increased risk of underdevelopment, low birth weight and health complications after birth. The Micro+ has the ability to monitor the mother’s CO levels in COppm (alveolar CO levels in parts per million) and %COHb. The monitor’s color touch-screen means that the user can switch between readings for the mother and fetus with a single touch, visually illustrating the risk to the patient and her child.
The Micro+
breath co monitor
can be used effectively in stop smoking programs for a range of
other smokers and situations. A motivational traffic light system of
green, amber and red displays smoking status in relation to ppm
levels. These levels can be switched between adult and adolescent
settings to suit hard to motivate or low level smokers. Custom
levels can also be set through COdata+ software, useful for example
when readings are taking during the morning when the patient will
not have had their normal quota of cigarettes. Patient data can be
recorded on the instrument itself, including name, time of test and
result, and displayed in a table or graph. The Micro+ measures up to
250ppm, enabling the monitor to also screen for CO poisoning. Further medical advice should be sought if unexpectedly high CO
readings are obtained as part of routine CO monitoring.

Calibration
The
Micro+ requires a calibration check at least once
every six months with Bedfont's 50ppm CO in air calibration gas. A reminder that calibration is due will be displayed on the
instrument’s start-up screen every 24 weeks. No specialist
technical knowledge or skills are required, making it easy to
calibrate with our Calibration Kit. We can also supply
replacement calibration gas in lightweight disposable cylinders.
A range of annual service packages are also available.
Consumables & Accessories
Cardboard mouthpieces are connected to the Micro+
via a D-piece. A one-way valve prevents air being drawn back
form the monitor. This system further reduces the risks of cross
infection and protects the instrument from contamination. The
breath then passes through an infection control filter, proven
to remove and trap >99.9% of airborne bacteria1. This system

from contamination. Bedfont recommend that D-pieces are changed
once every month or if visibly soiled – a prompt will be
displayed on the instrument every 28 days.
Bedfont Scientific also supplies an instrument cleansing wipe specifically developed for cleaning the surface of the monitors. Each wipe contains 1% Cetrimide, a powerful antimicrobial detergent. The wipes can also be used by patients to clean their hands before handling the instruments in areas without hand washing facilities. Alcohol, or cleaning agents containing alcohol, should never be used as they may adversely affect the sensor within the instrument.
Software - Included
COdata+™
is a software program for Microsoft Windows, for use with the
piCO+ and Micro+ Smokerlyzers®.
When connected to the Micro+ the software allows users to create custom ppm settings. Test results stored on the instrument can be downloaded into COdata+™, which provides an instant report of the patient's results. The report includes a specific interpretation of the patient's smoking habit and personal dependence on nicotine. This can be printed out and kept by the patient for their own records.

1. Flatpak Mouthpieces

The first accessory is the cardboard disposable mouthpieces, packaged
250 per box. They are disposed of after use on each subject. The
cardboard disposable mouthpieces are manufactured and packaged under
"clean room conditions" which ultimately means a cleaner, more hygienic
product.
2. D-piece Valves

The second accessory is the D-piece one-way valve sampling system, which
is proven to remove and trap >99.9% of airborne bacteria. The cardboard
disposable mouthpiece hooks onto this valve and it allows for one-way
breathing. The subject can exhale through the valve but cannot inhale,
which helps to keep the test hygienic. The valve can be used
multiple times on multiple subjects. The D-piece
should be replaced every 30 days or if visibly soiled. Your monitor
cannot be used without this item and you will eventually need to replace
it, so it is helpful to have extra on hand.
3. Calibration

The third required accessory is the calibration kit.
The calibration kit is a one-time purchase in the sense that the
hardware that comes with the kit should last the lifetime of your
monitor (assuming you take care of it). This kit comes with a regulator and a can of gas.
The can of gas should allow for
approximately 17 calibrations (the can is about the size of the small
fire extinguishers that most people keep under their kitchen cabinets in
their home). Once the can of gas is depleted, you would simply purchase
a replacement can of gas, not another calibration kit. Your monitor
will require calibration every six months, regardless of use and it will
come calibrated from our facility (which will be good for six months).
Calibration is a simple procedure and instructions do come with your
monitor, however, complimentary coVita phone support/training on
calibration is also available should you require assistance with the
procedure.
It is not necessary to purchase a separate calibration kit for every
monitor, if you are purchasing more than one monitor (assuming you can
get the monitors to the calibration kit). Please speak with a coVita
representative for further details.

4. Bedfont Wipes

alcohol-free cleansing wipes are specifically engineered to be used for
the cleaning of Bedfont monitors and accessories. Bedfont wipes were
developed to be alcohol-free because alcohol will interfere with the
sensor. We
recommend this product for anyone handling the monitor to assure the
highest level of infection control. Effective against 99.999% of
Germs, Spores, Bacteria, and Fungi. Tested against H5N1 Avian Flu
and H1N1 Swine Flu.
